Updated: 4 hrs agoPublished: 5 hrs ago
As of now, it looks like Jinder Mahal is the favourite to Backlash with the WWE Championship. In other news, Kevin Owens is now favourite to retain the US Championship.
WWE Backlash Preview and Predictions
WWE Backlash will be a defining pay per view for WWE as the WWE Universe prepares itself for the very first televised match of Shinsuke Nakamura on the main roster. The pay per view will also feature top stars of the blue brand including the likes of AJ Styles, Kevin Owens, Baron Corbin, Charlotte Flair, Randy Orton and much more. Another talking point of the night will be the WWE Championship bout between the current champion, Randy Orton and the upstart Jinder Mahal. The show will be streaming live on the WWE Network from the Allstate Arena in Chicago, IL.
#1 Tye Dillinger vs. Aiden English (Kick-off match)
This match will be featured on the pre-show where the ‘Perfect 10’ will be looking for his third consecutive victory over Aiden English. English’s new gimmick hasn’t seen any improvement in his booking when he lost two straight matches to Dillinger. English has also been portrayed as a cry-baby which many believe to be a knock on Mauro Ranallo. The artistically inclined superstar will look to pull on back against Dillinger at the pay per view.
Looking at the wave of momentum Dillinger has been riding on, it is improbable that he would lose out to English at the event. Dillinger is a charismatic superstar and should be looking to make his way up the roster. So the ‘Perfect 10’ should pick up the three count over ‘The Artiste’ in this encounter.
Prediction: Tye Dillinger defeats Aiden English
#2 Luke Harper vs. Eric Rowan
The two former Wyatt family members collide in this battle of behemoths. The former brothers-in-arms took to the ring against each other on Smackdown LIVE last week where Rowan pinned Harper. However, Rowan was at his eccentric best on Talking Smack when he said that he was not done with Harper and wanted to inflict further punishment at Backlash. The match was made for the pay per view and the former disciples of Bray Wyatt will go at it once again at the Allstate Arena.
Harper has been on the cusp of emerging as a breakout singles star. A victory over former Wyatt Family member at Backlash could propel his singles career to new heights. After all, he did the honors for Rowan last Tuesday and it is only befitting that he takes the victory at Backlash.
Prediction: Luke Harper defeats Eric Rowan
#3 Sami Zayn vs. Baron Corbin
Sami Zayn has been on Corbin’s radar ever since he made the jump to the blue brand during the superstar shakeup in April. The Lone Wolf attacked Zayn during an episode of Talking Smack a few weeks ago. The rivalry came to a head when Zayn retaliated with another attack and then asked for a match to be made for Backlash. Corbin, however, had the last laugh when he assaulted the Underdog from the Underground to seize the momentum heading into Sunday’s encounter.
Sami has been in bad shape after the move to Smackdown LIVE. On the other hand, Corbin has been on the steady rise making his way to a title reign. A win for Sami Zayn would not do much for either of the two men storyline wise. Sami is the kind of babyface that could take a loss and still come out looking good. So it makes sense that Baron Corbin goes over in this encounter.
Prediction: Baron Corbin defeats Sami Zayn
#4 Naomi, Charlotte Flair, and Becky Lynch vs. Natalya, Tamina, and Carmella (Six-woman Tag Team Match)
The Welcoming Committee comprising of Natalya, Tamina, and Carmella did not take to well to Charlotte getting a championship shot just weeks into her Smackdown LIVE shift. They sabotaged the title match between Naomi and Charlotte on Smackdown LIVE and laid out the two women. Becky Lynch managed to fool the Welcoming Committee and got a bit of offense in the following weeks but she too could not stand up to the combined might of the Welcoming Committee. This beat down led to a tag team affair at Backlash where the likes of Charlotte, Naomi, and Becky will have to work together despite their personal differences to gain an upper hand over the trio of Natalya, Tamina, and Carmella with the crafty James Ellsworth on their side.
This is one of the more difficult matches to call on the card. Both Charlotte and Becky have teased heel turns and Sunday could be the night that Becky finally lets off some steam and turns her back on the WWE Universe. Add to that the shenanigans of James Ellsworth and the odds are heavily in favor of the Welcoming Committee. But it is also worth noticing that Charlotte, Becky, and Naomi are perhaps the three best athletes in the women’s division of the blue brand and they have not been able to get a hold of the Welcoming Committee even once. Backlash could finally be the setting where the babyfaces work out their differences to take down the heelish trio.
Prediction: Charlotte, Naomi, and Becky defeat Natalya, Carmella, and Tamina
#5 The Usos (C) vs. Breezango for the Smackdown Tag Team Championships
The charismatic duo of Tyler Breeze and Fandango have been on the rise over the past few weeks after winning the number one contender’s beat the clock challenge. They will look to dethrone the Usos to win their first tag team championships. Meanwhile, the Usos have held on to the title since March when they beat American Alpha. The Usos have been vicious, to say the least after the change in gimmick. The duo has lost the face paint and now, mean business when they step inside the ropes. The Fashion Police will have their task cut out against the tag team specialists on Sunday in Chicago.
Tyler Breeze and Fandango have been underutilized for most of the Smackdown LIVE tenure. However, the duo has proved in the weeks building up to Backlash that they can work with their gimmick and carry the tag team championships. Moreover, the Usos have not done much with the titles. In fact, the Smackdown Tag Team Championships were the only titles to not be defended at Wrestlemania 33. A run with new champions could do a load of good for the tag team division of Smackdown LIVE.
Prediction: Breezango defeat the Usos to win the Smackdown Tag Team Championships
#6 Kevin Owens (C) vs. AJ Styles for the United States Championship
The New Face of America, Kevin Owens has been impressive in his second run with the United States Championship. Kevin Owens highlighted a brutal aspect of his persona when he took out Chris Jericho on his first night in the blue brand. Owens won the United States Championship and sent Y2J packing for good in a brutal attack. However, the man he is going against has had the best one and half year in profession wrestling. AJ Styles believes that Smackdown LIVE centers around him. Styles took down Sami Zayn and Baron Corbin in a number one contender’s match and has been since looking to get his hands on the US title.
This match is a potential match of the year candidate. Both Owens and Styles are excellent workers and will burn the house down with a match of epic proportions. However, with rumors abounding that Styles will once again move to the main event picture, it seems likely that Owens will hold on to the title via some shenanigans with the referee distracted.
Prediction: Kevin Owens beats AJ Styles to retain the United States Championship
#7 Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Dolph Ziggler
Another match of the year contender, this is the match that has been the highlight of the pay per view. This is because of a certain Shinsuke Nakamura who will compete in his highly anticipated first match on the main roster. Dolph Ziggler has called out the Artist Shinsuke Nakamura as a result of his growing resentment over the fanfare surrounding him. Ziggler has been on an unrelenting mission of exposing Nakamura of being one of the most overrated, overhyped competitors to step into the ring.
This match has to be Shinsuke Nakamura’s big welcoming into the blue brand. It is almost a no-brainer that the King of Strong Style wins this match to go on to bigger and better things in the WWE. With Shinsuke being in his late 30s, there is not a lot of time for him to settle into the roster. WWE should go full steam ahead with him and capitalize on the support that Nakamura has from the WWE Universe.
Prediction: Shinsuke Nakamura defeats Dolph Ziggler
#8 Randy Orton (C) vs. Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship
Jinder Mahal’s ascension to the main roster has been a point of debate among many in the WWE Universe. The Maharajah made his way through the likes of Dolph Ziggler, Sami Zayn, Luke Harper, Eric Rowan, and Mojo Rawley to become the number one contender. Jinder even cost Randy the “House of Horrors” match at Payback. With the Singh Brothers on his side, Jinder will look to take down the Apex Predator of the WWE for his maiden run with the most prestigious championship in the company.
WWE have every chance of pulling a swerve on its audience and crowning Jinder the Champion, but it is still a safe bet to assume that Randy Orton will be coming out of Backlash the WWE Champion. A program with Rusev is on hold at the moment and Randy seems to be the best guy to keep holding the championship until Summerslam where he can pass it on to either AJ Styles or Shinsuke Nakamura in a high profile matchup.
Prediction: Randy Orton defeats Jinder Mahal to retain the WWE Championship
