WWE NXT News: Stipulation set for tag title match at Takeover: Chicago
A major stipulation for the NXT Tag Team Championship match at Takeover: Chicago was announced today!
What’s the story?
It probably comes as a shock to absolutely nobody that D.I.Y. (Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa) will challenge Paul Ellering’s Authors of Pain for the NXT Tag Team Championship at NXT Takeover: Chicago. What we didn’t know until tonight’s episode of NXT, however, is what kind of match those titles will be fought for in.
The background
At NXT Takeover: Orlando last month, the Authors of Pain successfully defended their titles in what was an epic Triple Threat elimination match against both D.I.Y. and The Revival. With Dash and Dawson now on Raw, D.I.Y. find themselves the biggest names in the tag division outside of the champs.
While NXT is in the process of rebuilding the division – with guys like Heavy Machinery and D.I.Y.’s opponents tonight, Tino Sabbatelli and Riddick Moss – Gargano and Ciampa are the only real choices for a title match.
The heart of the matter
After dispatching Sabbatelli and Moss in a pretty decent match, NXT General Manager William Regal came to the stage to announce D.I.Y. as the Authors of Pain’s opponents at Takeover. Ellering and his team came to interrupt, saying that Regal would be responsible for anything that happened to D.I.Y. in that match.
It was then that Regal informed all parties involved that the titles would be defended in a ladder match. For some reason, Ellering and the Authors did not take kindly to this news.
What’s next?
Both teams have proven that they can put on a really good match together in the past, and there’s a good chance that, even without The Revival involved, this could potentially be the match of the night,

Author’s Take
Here’s my theory – the NXT tag division still needs some building before it can afford to lose either team to the main roster just yet. I’m predicting a feel-good win for D.I.Y., followed by a few weeks of them defending the belts “against all comers” – aka newer teams – putting on great matches to help get them over.
Finally, AOP will get their rematch, with the winners staying in NXT to anchor the division for a while, and the losers heading to the main roster.
