From the WWE Rumor Mill: Update on WWE's meeting about plans for the Universal title
On today's instalment of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the recent WWE meeting regarding the fate of the Universal title
What’s the story?
On the latest instalment of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed the recent WWE meeting regarding the fate of the Universal Championship. Moreover, he stated that Brock Lesnar will return to weekly programming next month.
The background
In March, at the Fastlane PPV, Goldberg beat Kevin Owens in 22 seconds and became the new Universal Champion. Thereafter, at WrestleMania 33, he put the title on the line against ‘The Beast Incarnate’.
At the ‘Showcase of The Immortals’, Lesnar defeated Goldberg in a brutal match and won the title. The very next night, he appeared on Raw and had a showdown with Braun Strowman. Following this, Lesnar went on hiatus.
The heart of the matter
On the latest instalment of the Wrestling Observer Radio, Meltzer said he isn’t sure about who Lesnar will face at the Great Balls Of Fire PPV. However, at the same time, he stressed that the WWE does have a plan in mind.
Moreover, he added that Lesnar will be returning to WWE programming on June 12th. Besides this, Meltzer also addressed the situation regarding Strowman’s injury and said that one can expect an update on the same on tomorrow’s episode of Raw.
What’s next?
We’ll have to wait for tomorrow’s edition of Raw in order to get some clarity on the situation. If Strowman’s injury is not too serious, ‘The Monster Among Men’ could still square off against Lesnar at The Great Balls of Fire.
However, if the injury is worse than expected, the WWE may be forced to go with plan B. Either way, one can expect Lesnar to defend the belt at the PPV.
Author’s take
Lesnar is one of the most recognisable stars on the current WWE roster. Similarly, Strowman is hot property these days. As such, a match between them at the Great Balls of Fire PPV will most certainly be best for business. So, let’s hope that Strowman recovers in time for the PPV and gives ‘The Conquerer’ a run for his money.
